About Harbourside Dental

Harbourside Dental has been providing dental care for the whole family for over 40 years in the heart of Port Dalhousie. When Dr. Mark Poustie took ownership in 2016, it was important to him to honour the way the practice has always cared for and treated its patients while also modernizing the office. Today we combine our family-friendly care with state-of-the-art dental technology.

When patients come to our office, it is our goal to put them at ease and make them feel welcome. We are so thankful to all of our loyal patients who continue to trust us with their care, and we also welcome new patients to our office. We continue to be a family-run practice that offers personalized dental care to all patients.

Oral Cancer Screening

During routine examinations, our dentists perform a thorough visual inspection to identify abnormal tissue in your mouth. The goal of our preventative oral cancer screening is to identify any pre-cancer or cancerous tissue at a very early stage. There are certain factors that can put you at higher risk (i.e. tobacco, heavy alcohol use and age) however, oral cancer can happen to anyone. It is not a disease of the elderly and is in fact now becoming more common in the younger population.

Comprehensive Exam

Digital X-Rays

X-rays are used for finding early signs of tooth decay, hard-to-find cavities and cavities that are just forming. Detecting early signs of decay is highly beneficial as it results in a less invasive and less costly treatment for the patients. Our office has modern digital x-rays that allow for better image quality while exposing patients to less radiation.

Periodontal (Gum) Examination

Gum disease is one of the main reasons for tooth loss, so it’s important to practice preventative gum care. Periodontal exams are used to examine bleeding points, pocket depth, recession, mobility and bone loss. The state of your bones and gum tissue is very important when determining treatment needs. We take the health of your bone tissues and gums very seriously.

Comprehensive Exam

Occlusal (Bite) Examination

All new patient exams include a bite examination. This will also be done if a patient is experiencing symptoms of an unstable bite. If any issues with your bite are identified, a number of options may be used to bring your teeth back into a harmonious relationship. Proper adjustments can often help get rid of headaches and other symptoms that typically arise due to improper biting patterns.

Dental Decay (Cavity) Exam

This exam allows for our dentists to determine if a patient has cavities or decay. During the exam our dentists do a visual examination of the teeth and use digital x-rays. This will help us determine if decay is present, what stage it is at and if treatment is needed.

Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction Examination

Signs of Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction include pain in the jaw joints or chewing muscles, radiating pain in the jaw, face, or neck, stiffness of the jaw muscle, locking or limited movement of the jaw, painful popping, grating or clicking of the jaw when you open or close your mouth and a change in the way the lower and upper teeth fit together. People may experience varying degrees of TMJ dysfunction throughout their lives and our clinic offers treatments that are designed to help ease the pain and symptoms that it may cause.

Hygiene Appointments

Hygiene appointments allow our hygienists and doctors to keep track of the current state of our patients’ oral health. During the appointments our patients can expect our hygienists to clean hard-to-reach areas under the gum line, remove plaque that causes infection and decay and provide an education on how to maintain good oral hygiene. Regular visits are an important part of maintaining good overall health.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride makes teeth more resistant to acid attack from sugars and plaque bacteria. It strengthens tooth enamel and makes it harder for cavities to form. It is important that children receive regular fluoride treatments. Adults, however, can also benefit from fluoride treatments if they are prone to decay or have sensitive teeth.

Nightguard Therapy

Sleep bruxism (teeth grinding) is a common symptom that people suffer from. It is characterized by the repeated clenching and grinding of one’s teeth. While it’s usually prominent during sleeping hours, a lot of people do it subconsciously when they are awake. Bruxism can cause an accelerated loss of bone and wears down the tooth structure. A nightguard is the most effective and least intrusive treatment for the majority of patients. It works to keep the chewing muscles relaxed and prevents teeth from coming in contact with each other while you sleep.

Sealants

Dental sealants are thin coatings that are applied to the grooves and pits of teeth. They work to protect teeth from decay. They are very common for children to get on their premolars and permanent molars in order to protect their teeth during their cavity-prone years. Adults can benefit from them too. Dental sealants typically last for several years.

Tooth Desensitization

To desensitize a tooth our dentists apply a thin coat of fluoride gel. The fluoride gel works to strengthen enamel and reduce teeth sensitivity caused by receding gums. This stops the transmission to the nerves that cause pain. The appointment only takes a few minutes and has long-lasting results.

Custom Sportsguards

Any sport where there is a good chance that there will be contact between participants should require the players to wear a sportsguard. Sportsguards help protect the teeth and also help prevent injury when the lower jaw is pushed up into the upper jaw. Many people do not like to wear them because they are bulky or do not fit well. Our custom sportsguards are comfortable, form-fitting and smaller in size that the ones bought off the shelf.

Restorative Procedures

Sedation – Oral Sedation

Oral sedation may be offered to nervous and anxious patients in order to allow them to have necessary dental treatment in a more comfortable fashion. It consists of taking an oral sedative prior to the appointment. Throughout, our dentists monitor the patient to ensure comfort and a positive treatment experience. Patients will need to have a family member or friend accompany them to and from their appointment.

Fillings

White/Composite Fillings

White/ composite fillings are a great aesthetic option as they are tooth-coloured fillings placed after decayed or unhealthy tooth structure is removed. The dentist can blend the shades to create a colour that matches the actual tooth, which creates an illusion of there being no filling at all. Composites bond to the tooth and support the remaining tooth structure. It helps prevent breakage and insulates the tooth from changes in temperature.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings are silver fillings that are occasionally recommended for back teeth (such as molars) where white fillings may be difficult to place.

Restorative Procedures

Root Canal

A root canal may be needed if the nerve in the centre of the tooth becomes infected due to a large cavity or through trauma. An infected tooth can become quite painful. Root canals are used as a method to save damaged teeth. The dentist removes the infected nerve tissue inside the tooth and then places a soft filling material inside the root, helping any infection to heal. The tooth is then sealed with a filling and typically a crown is placed over the weakened tooth to protect it and to restore the tooth back to function.

Inlays or onlays are the perfect answer for patients who do not need a full crown but are in need of a long-lasting restoration. The restoration procedure uses porcelain material to replace missing or weak tooth structure, in a conservative manner.

Crowns

Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over “damaged” teeth to restore its size, strength, shape and improve its function. They can be used to protect weak teeth from breaking, as a restorative technique for worn teeth, to keep dental bridges in place, cover discoloured teeth or for cosmetic purposes. Root canal treated teeth will benefit from a crown which provides support and strengthens the tooth after treatment.

Implants

Dental implants are artificial roots that are placed in your jaw bone. Artificial teeth are then attached to the implants. They are a great option for people who have lost teeth as a result of injury, periodontal disease, infection or decay. They are made of medical grade titanium that is compatible with your jaw bone, and can support crowns or bridges that feel, look and function just like natural teeth. They can also be used to support dentures and eliminate a lot of problems and irritation patients have with removable dentures.

Similar to crowns, bridges are typically used as a replacement for one or more missing teeth. As the name suggests, they are used to bridge the gap that is created when teeth are lost. Bridges are constructed from two or more crowns that have been bonded together. In addition, they help restore a patient’s natural smile and ability to speak and chew properly.

Whitening – in-office & at-home

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment offered to treat patients with stained, discoloured, or dull teeth who want a brighter smile. Our office offers both in-office and at-home whitening treatments that can help get rid of stains caused by smoking, food and beverages and some medications.

Zoom Whitening

Zoom whitening is a whitening procedure that is done in the office. In just one visit your teeth will become dramatically whiter. It is a safe and effective procedure. Zoom whitening is a great choice for someone looking for immediate results.

Invisalign (Teeth Straightening)

Invisalign is an alternative to regular braces where custom-made trays fit over a patient’s teeth and are used to orthodontically move teeth. As the name suggests, the trays are made of a nearly invisible plastic that is also smooth and comfortable. Wearing the trays will help gradually shift teeth into place and are great for patients who do not wish to have regular braces on their teeth.

Bonding is a procedure used to close gaps, repair chipped or fractured teeth and mask discoloured teeth. The process sees tooth-coloured material applied to the tooth’s surface which is then sculpted, hardened and polished to match the surrounding teeth.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are used to replace all of a patients teeth. Dentures are removable so that patients can clean their gums and mouth. They typically rest on the remaining gum tissue and can also be supported by implants.

Partial Dentures

If a patient has lost multiple teeth but still has a number of good teeth remaining, partial dentures may be used to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures rest on a metal or acrylic frame that attaches to a patient’s natural teeth. Although removable, a partial denture will give the patient a more stable bite and restore the unwanted appearance of missing teeth.
